June 2008

On Monday night we enjoyed a celebration with our small group and a few others. The menu: ice cream!

My adviser George stopped by.

The next evening we celebrated with Rosa and Calvin Borntrager, who cared for Andrew and Jonathan during the defense–and whose childcare over the last two years helped get this dissertation done.

The boys really enjoyed playing with two of their grandchildren.

We also stopped to see the Mausts, Lisa’s relatives, while in Goshen. A & J loved petting the horse, the many cats and dogs, and rabbits. They also picked strawberries from the garden.

And now, it’s back to work.

The defense went splendidly. My committee was kind and affirming. Tim Erdel, Mary VanderKam, David Sikkink, a number of classmates, Lisa, and Benjamin attended. After 90 minutes, the committee sent me and everyone else out of the room. Two minutes later, they emerged with congratulations!

Here’s Benjamin, who tolerated a full hour of academic drivel before being banished from the room for fussiness (thankfully he was fussier than my examiners), celebrating with me afterward. Clearly he’s very impressed. His dirty diaper a few minutes after the defense brought me back to earth!

Today we went downtown to an “eco fair.” A&J enjoyed meeting an enormous “puppy” (I think it was a great dane), walking by the river where we watched kayaking, and playing on an inflatable trampoline. Oh, and the good folks at AM General were giving out Hummer coloring books. Yep, at an eco fair. Hmmm. . .

We forgot to take the camera, but when we got home I took some pictures of A&J sporting their snake and football art.

David: Do you want to be called Andrew or Drew?

Andrew: Jonathan
