March 2008

Benjamin is back up to his birth weight of 7 pounds even!

  • Benjamin is off the bili blanket!
  • Last night, all five of us took our first outing together. We went to Townline Mennonite Church to hear the Rosedale Chorale, which both Lisa and I sang in together just six years ago. Had a great time seeing lots of family and friends. On the way home, we dropped off Andrew and Jonathan at the Borntragers, where they’ll stay until dinner tonight.
  • Nursing seems to be going really well. We’re still trying not to get our hopes too high, but it’s getting hard not to! Today Benjamin gets weighed, so that will be be telling.

One of the not-so-nice developments is that I have developed a nasty spinal headache. This is a not-very-serious-but-very-unpleasant experience brought on by the epidural that, ironically, didn’t even work for most of my labor. Basically, this means that I’m a little dizzy and I have migraine-like pain constantly and if it doesn’t go away in a week or so (!) there’s a medical procedure needed to fix things. Fortunately, I got some very nice drugs from the doctor yesterday, and caffeine also helps. I always knew that coffee was my friend. . .

We found out at the doctor that B has pretty serious jaundice–which we suspected. This isn’t really something to worry about, but it needs to be taken care of. So last night a medical technician brought over a special blanket for him to wear that should help. Just what I always wanted–a radio-active baby.

After a day of wearing the blanket, his bilirubin count dropped from 20 to 15. Good, but still not good enough for the doctor. We were hoping to go to church in the morning and then to Middlebury to hear Rosedale Chorale sing in the evening. But it seems as if we’re stuck as long as he has to wear the blanket. Maybe we’ll be free tomorrow afternoon.

The last two nights have been OK–just OK,  but with a newborn that’s not too shabby. Last night B slept from 12:30 until 4:00 and then until 6:00.

We’re still not sure how much milk he’s actually getting. I didn’t produce very much at all with the twins, and I’ve been really afraid of the same progression this time. Not my favorite part of having a newborn. But we’re trying everything we can think of and I’m cautiously optimistic at this point. My dad even offered this piece of advice: “Cows (he grew up on a dairy farm) are scientifically proven to produce more milk when you play easy-listening music in the barn.” Bring on the Kenny G.

Benjamin had his first well-baby visit to Dr. Balakrishnan yesterday. He weighed 6 pounds, 12 and 3/4 oz–down from his 6 pound 13 oz discharge weight. He must be putting something down!
